Celebrating the Birth . . . Gary Gygax

Ernest Gary Gygax (July 27, 1938 – March 4, 2008)
Best known as the creator/co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Gygax also created Chainmail, Boothill (with Brian Blume), Dangerous Journeys, and Lejendary Adventure.  He wrote several fantasy novels associated with these games, including the Gord the Rogue series. He also created the first and in my opinion, best D&D game setting The World of Greyhawk.

Unfortunately there is no freely available fiction by him so here is a monster in a format I'm sure he would recognize.

Appearing as extremely pale women with glowing green eyes, these restless undead haunt the banks of many rivers and small lakes. A rusalka is created when a young maiden commits suicide in or near a small body of water or an unmarried, pregnant woman drowns in one.  Seeking company in  their unlife, they attempt to charm men and children to join them in the shallows of the water.  They can cast charm person at will and the touch of a rusalka drains the victim of one energy level.  Victims drained of all levels drown, but do not rise as any form of undead, leaving the frustrated ruslaka to try again.  They are said to tickle men to death, but this is likely a polite euphemism.

Rusalki are at their most dangerous in early June, when they leave the water and climb nearby trees, occasionally gathering in small groups of 2-8.
