Morning Free Fiction

Already a lot of good stuff!

Fiction
• At The Colored Lens: "The Flower Garden – Part 1" by Michael Shone.
"Greg Winden saw the living machine thing from the Lockheed’s window as the aircraft made its final approach into Garnet Hill. He’d always enjoyed seeing his father’s house from the plane whenever he flew in from Newark, but it was weird seeing a mechwurm just across the highway."

• At L5R: "Scenes from the Empire" by Seth Mason, Nancy Sauer, and Shawn Carman. Fantasy. RPG.
"Bayushi Shibata allowed himself a slight smile underneath his mask. The Scorpion Embassy in the SecondCity was being repaired in a timely fashion after the riots had ebbed. Servants worked quickly to remove wreckage, and laborers replaced burned or broken parts here and there. It was orderly. Efficient. Calm."

• At Lightspeed: "The Schrödinger War"  by D. Thomas Minton. Science Fiction.
"You’d think after seven tries, I could get the living part right, or at least be a pro at dying, but both are still messy and painful. At least dying doesn’t scare me anymore. I yank Olshevski back into our wrinkle of black basalt before the Eatees mist his head."

• At Lightspeed: "Suzanne Delage" by Gene Wolfe. Fantasy.
"As I was reading last night—reading a book, I should explain, which was otherwise merely commonplace; one of those somewhat political, somewhat philosophical, somewhat historical books which can now be bought by the pound each month—I was struck by a certain remark of the author’s. It seemed to me at the time an interesting, if almost self-evident"

• At Strange Horizons: "You Have to Follow the Rules" by Ada Hoffmann.
"Of course, Mommy's noticing powers weren't very good. She'd said and said that the convention would have Star Wars, fairies, space captains, even a room the color of deep space where projected stars whooshed past, where Annalee could lie on her tummy and pretend to zoom through hyperspace. She'd said and said that Annalee could make friends, as if that was more exciting than a space-room."
