E, Nesbit was a successful and influential writer of children's stories, including many fantasies, as well as adult ghost stories. On the positive side, her writing is seen as having an influence on writers as diverse as C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling. On the negative side, her works have tendency to be tedious and condescending, as well as preferencing the mundane over the imaginative. Many of her works are freely and easily available.
